Description
No. 27 on Shropshire Street is a house that has been converted into a restaurant. It dates from the early to mid-17th century and features a timber frame with plaster and painted brick infill, set on a painted dressed sandstone plinth, with some parts rebuilt in painted brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles.
The front wall and gable have closely spaced vertical timbers arranged in three tiers from the sole plate to the wall plate. The side walls consist of small square panels, with three panels from the sole plate to the wall plate, and short straight corner braces. The building has three framed bays that run at right angles to the road and is one storey high with an attic.
The gable end at the front is adorned with shaped barge boards. Each of the left and right return fronts features a gabled eaves dormer with a two-light wooden casement window that has diamond-leaded glass. There is a brick chimney stack located to the right of the ridge. A canted attic oriel window has a design of one central light flanked by two lights on either side, all with diamond-leaded glass and a hipped top, supported by two wooden brackets.
On the ground floor, there is a small-paned window with four panes across and three panes down, which has weathering and is flanked by applied half-balusters and narrow side lights. The half-glazed door on the left-hand return front has two ogee-headed panels and is sheltered by a gabled porch. The interior has not been inspected.
