Description
No. 15 on St Mary's Street is a restaurant that was originally a dwelling, dating from the early 17th century with later alterations, including a facade from the early 20th century. The building is constructed of brick with a mock timber facade and retains elements of its original timber-framing. It has a plain tiled roof and a gable that faces the street, featuring an inserted early 20th-century shop front. Above this, there is a full-height oriel bay with mullioned and transomed windows, decorated with quatrefoil panels and a castellated parapet. The mock timber framing is arranged in a lozenge pattern, and the building has barge-boards with a pendant finial. There are paired gabled dormers in the side wall above a flat-roofed extension, which incorporates remnants of earlier brickwork and includes a doorway with a vestigial canopy on the street elevation, along with a 12-pane sash window above. Inside, various re-used timbers are used for ceiling paneling and internal partitions, and there are partial remains of an early 17th-century staircase with splat balusters.
