Description
No. 17 on St Mary's Street is a shop that was originally a dwelling, dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of painted brick with stone dressings and has a plain tiled roof. The gable faces the street, and the building is two storeys high with an attic. There is a single-window range in the gable and also on the return elevation to Church Street. A shop front was added in the late 19th century, featuring a central doorway flanked by two windows, with a continuous fascia supported by cast-iron columns. Above the shop front, there is a central leaded two-light casement window, and a six-pane sash window in the coped gable, which is flanked by segmentally-arched niches with drop-ended hoodmoulds. A deep dentilled string course above the first-floor window extends across the return elevation. The building has stone angle quoins. There is a doorway to the right on the Church Street elevation, which may have a flying freehold over the Loggerheads public house, although the two properties were clearly built as a single structure. Additionally, there is a three-light mullioned and transomed window on the first floor of this elevation, and a gabled dormer in the roof.
