Description

The Prince Rupert Hotel is a building that was originally a house, now functioning as a hotel. It dates largely from the early 17th century and was constructed in several phases. The structure features a timber frame with a brick lower storey and a plain tiled roof. It has two storeys with high gabled attics and a four-window range. The ground floor has been rebuilt in brick, with all features renewed, including an outer double doorway and five casement windows that have mullions and transoms.

The upper storey juts out, supported by moulded bressumers, and was built in three phases. The outer bays are likely the oldest part of the building; the left-hand bay is mostly plastered over, revealing only the corner post and wall plate. It has a three-light casement window, with another in the gabled dormer above. The right-hand bay is framed with close studding and a mid rail, featuring long raking tension braces. It includes a projecting four-light wood mullioned and transomed window, along with a three-light casement in the wide attic gable.

The central section consists of two bays, framed with close studding, and has a tier of quatrefoil panelling above the middle rail, with ogee braces below it. There is also quatrefoil panelling and balustraded studs beneath the two gabled attic dormers. A stack is located on the gable end of this central block.
