Description

The Old Mansion is a house that has been converted for use as offices and stores. It dates from the early 17th century and is faced in brick, which has been painted, likely in the late 17th or early 18th century. The building features a plain tiled roof and stands three storeys high with a three-window range. It has asymmetrical projecting outer gables and slightly advanced front wall stacks. The central doorway has a part-glazed six-panelled door set in a latticed porch with a hood. The windows are 16-pane sash windows with flat-arched heads in the gables, while the upper windows are also 16-pane flush-framed sashes with single ring cambered heads, showing some signs that the original windows were narrower. The attic has casement windows, with the right-hand window now blocked. There is a two-light window in the central bay and an original two-light window in the left-hand gable that was extended to three lights in the early 20th century. Inside, the rear wall exposes timber-framing with close studding and angle braces, along with some wall panelling. The early 17th-century staircase features bulbous splat balusters, a moulded rail, and Mannerist newel posts. The house is said to have been built by Thomas Jones, a lawyer and the first mayor of Shrewsbury in 1639.
