Description
No. 4 on Church Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the mid-to-late 18th century and incorporates an earlier structure. The building is made of red brick, with some timber framing, and has a plain tile roof. It stands two storeys high and features an integral brick end stack on the left, along with a 19th-century external lateral stack at the rear. The front has two windows, which are segmental-headed 2-light wooden-framed metal casements. There is also a narrow inserted 20th-century ground-floor window to the right and an off-centre segmental-headed half-glazed door to the right. The rear wall is timber-framed, and there is a one-storey lean-to at the back. Inside, some original framing remains, including corner posts with joists and a square-panelled left-hand end wall. The ground-floor room has a chamfered spine beam and plain joists. There is an 18th-century winder stair with a landing balustrade featuring turned balusters. The building is included for its group value.
