Description

Old George Chambers is a house that later became an inn and is now used as a shop and offices. It likely dates from the early to mid-19th century, with some additions from the late 18th century and alterations from the early to mid-19th century. The exterior is rendered to resemble ashlar, probably over a timber frame, with parts rebuilt in red sandstone and red brick. There are red brick additions at the rear and a plain tile roof. The building has one and a half bays, with a flush gabled cross wing on the left side that has two or three bays. It is two storeys high, with some additions that include two storeys and an attic. The cross wing features brackets that support the wall plate, and there is a truncated brick ridge stack located off-centre to the left at the junction with the cross wing. On the first floor, there are three 19th-century four-pane sash windows with painted stone cills. The front has a pair of large late 20th-century plate-glass shop windows, with a glazed door set at an angle to the left and a recessed porch to the right that has two glazed doors. The rear of the cross wing has been rebuilt in brick, with a rendered gable above. There is also a large brick wing at the rear, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, which is two storeys high with an attic, featuring a dentil brick eaves cornice and an integral lateral brick stack. Inside, there is evidence of timber framing.
