Description
Nos. 6 and 8 on Great Hales Street is a house that has been converted into a pair of shops. The building dates from the mid-17th century, with early 18th-century alterations dated 1702, and further modifications made in the mid to late 19th century. It features a timber frame with brick nogging, and parts have been rebuilt in painted and rendered brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has two bands of fishscale tiles. The framing consists of small square panels and the building is arranged in three framed bays. It has one storey with an attic and two storeys overall.
To the right, there are two gabled semi-dormers, with the left one displaying a cambered tie-beam inscribed with "17 T M 02" and struts above, both dormers have late 20th-century louvres over the windows and plain barge boards. There is an off-centre brick ridge stack to the left. On the first floor, there is a three-light 19th-century wooden casement window to the left, accompanied by a late 20th-century louvred screen. The shop fronts, which are also from the late 20th century, feature plate-glass windows and glazed doors, along with an additional 20th-century window and half-glazed door in the centre. A revolving barber's pole is located to the left of the right-hand shop front. Some original timber framing remains visible in the rear wall, which also includes a 19th-century brick wing.
Inside, there is a cambered tie-beam truss with queen struts, and chamfered purlins. The left-hand ground-floor room has a chamfered spine beam and plain joists, along with old floorboards and boarded doors. The eaves were likely raised in the 18th century. Only part of the interior was inspected.
