Coates Farmhouse

Coates Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 17th century or earlier, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble, pebbledashed at the front and partially brick at the rear, topped with an asbestos slate roof. The building is aligned east-west and has a south-facing aspect, possibly resembling a longhouse, with three irregular catslide outshuts on the north side extending over the western half.

The farmhouse has two storeys and features irregular fenestration, with five windows on the first floor, all from the 20th century except for a small window aligned with the chimney. On the ground floor, there are four windows, again all 20th century except for the one on the right, which has Gothic glazing dating from around the 1870s. There are two doorways; the left-hand one may be a 19th-century insertion, while the right-hand doorway has a glazed and gabled porch to the right of the chimney bay. The building has a large central ridge stack made of limestone with a brown brick top and capping, and a further brick end stack to the left.

Inside, the ground floor room to the right of the center features a very large fireplace, next to which is what may be the bottom end of a cruck blade, along with a heavy spine beam. The room to the left of the chimney also has two chamfered spine beams and another very large fireplace.
