4/43 Coates Farmhouse - - II

Farmhouse. C17 or earlier with later additions and alterations. Uncoursed lime- stone rubble, pebbledashed to front, partially brick to rear; asbestos slate roof. Aligned east-west, aspect south; perhaps a longhouse derivative, 3 irregular catslide outshuts on north side extending over western half. 2 storeys; irregular fenestration, 5 windows on first floor, all C20 except small window in line with chimney; 4 to ground floor all C20 except that on right with Gothic glazing (c.1870's); 2 doorways, the left hand one perhaps a C19 insertion, the right hand one with glazed and gabled porch to right of chimney bay; large central ridge stack of limestone with brown brick top and capping, further brick end stack to left. Interior. Ground floor room right of centre has a very large fireplace to the right of which is what may be the bottom end of a cruck blade, also a heavy spine beam; the room to the left of the chimney has 2 chamfered spine beams and again a very large fireplace.
