Description

Barrow Street Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, with a date of 1611 possibly linked to some internal features. The building is constructed of coursed and squared limestone rubble with a plain tile roof, and has ashlar stacks that are raised in brick. It is designed in an L-plan form, featuring gabled outer arms and a hipped return, and may have originally had a thatched roof, as indicated by the coped gables and kneelers that stand prominently above the roof surface.

The front of the house, facing the road, is two storeys high and has three windows, all of which are three-light casements with leading, except for the top left window, which is a two-light small-paned casement. These windows are set beneath wood lintels. There is a lean-to structure on the right side and a plain gable return on the left. The rear of the house includes a short wing with a 20th-century flat dormer and three-light leaded casements on both the ground and first floors, along with a lean-to at the gable and a small single light window in the attic above. The main section features two three-light leaded casements and one two-light casement with glazing bars. A 20th-century door and gabled porch are located on the left side.

Inside, the farmhouse retains several notable features, including good early plank doors, a chamfered stopped spine beam, and two impressive beams at the south end. The lateral stair has splat balusters and a screen with a moulded muntin rail, with the upper flight including winders. There is a large bressumer fireplace in the short wing, and a window that is now internal at the upper floor's north end. Overall, this farmhouse is less modified than many others of its kind.
