Description
The Church of St Matthew is an Anglican parish church designed by C E Ponting and built in 1882. It is constructed from rock-faced coursed limestone with yellow ashlar dressings and features a plain-tiled roof. The church comprises a nave, chancel, bell-cote, north porch, and south vestry.
On the south side of the nave, there are four 2-light segmental-headed flush set windows with chamfer surrounds. The vestry has a door with a shouldered arch and a stone stack that has an offset and a broached round capping. At the junction of the nave and chancel, there is a timber-framed bell-cote with gablets on the east and west sides and a tile-clad base, topped with an iron decorative cross on the east gable. The chancel features three flush lancets and a paired lancet on the north side, with a plinth course present only on the apse.
The north side of the nave mirrors the south side but also includes a timber-framed porch with glazed sides. There is a single offset buttress to the left of the nave. The church retains its original iron hopper-heads and downpipes. Overall, it is a modest building constructed with a tight budget.
