Description
The barn at Lower Mere Park Farm dates from the mid to late 18th century. It features a timber frame that is unbraced, with weatherboarding and a rubble plinth wall, along with some brick noggin at the end closest to the farmhouse. The roof is covered with Welsh slate. This long building has half-hipped ends and two hipped cart entries that are symmetrically placed on the west front, with paired plank doors opposite paired doors that are flush on the east side. There are lean-to additions that are not of special interest. The barn consists of eight bays with tie beams connected to jowelled posts, two purlins, a diagonal ridge, and many original rafters. At the south end, the exterior brick nogged two bays have a full-height brick partition internally, located just south of the truss, with a floor inserted. During the survey in July 1986, the center of the barn was filled with hay, concealing interior details. The barn is part of Mere Park, which is a property of the Duchy of Cornwall, and it groups with the Granary to its west.
