Description
Kirby Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone and features a slate roof and a brick end stack. The building has a T-plan layout and stands two storeys high with an attic, presenting a two-window range. The main front faces the yard and includes a 20th-century porch to the right, along with two-light casement windows throughout, except for a one-light window above the porch, all of which have timber lintels. There is a wing to the rear right, and a two-storey, two-window extension from the late 18th or early 19th century to the right, which was formerly used as a dairy but is now part of the general accommodation.
Inside, the farmhouse features old tile floors, a moulded spine beam, and an open fireplace with a moulded cambered bressumer and a bread oven. There is also an early 18th-century veined marble chimneypiece, old doors, and a fine open-well staircase that leads from the ground floor to the attic, complete with turned balusters and ball finials on the newel posts. A fragment of a fireback discovered during renovations has been dated to around 1640 and is preserved in the house.
