Description

The Barley Mow and Number 55 is a public house located on the south side of High Street in Paulerspury. It dates back to the 18th century and is marked with the date 1801. The building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, which is painted, and features a slate roof with brick stacks at the ends and ridge.

The structure has a two-unit plan with one-unit additions at either end, standing two storeys high with an attic and a four-window range. To the left of the center, there is a four-panel part-glazed door that has a moulded wood surround, a timber lintel, and a gabled hood supported by brackets. To the left of this door is a canted bay with a 16-pane sash window at the front and 4-pane sashes on the sides. To the right, there is a two-light casement window and a plank door in a moulded wood surround, flanked by three-light casements, all under a continuous wood lintel. The first floor features three-light casements with timber lintels. Above the door to the right, there is a datestone inscribed "S/TE/MDCCCI," and the building has two gabled roof dormers.

A two-storey addition to the left of the main building projects forward and includes a further single-storey extension with a gable wall made of brick. Inside, the property has an ogee stop-chamfered spine beam, several stop-chamfered joists, and an open fireplace with an ogee stop-chamfered bressumer.
