Description
This is an early 18th-century cottage with alterations and extensions added in the 20th century. The exterior is built of coursed limestone rubble and rendered brick, with a corrugated asbestos covering over what was originally a thatched roof. It is a two-story house with a two-window front. A 20th-century gabled stone porch sits centrally, housing a 20th-century door, and is flanked by three-light 20th-century casement windows. The ground floor windows at the rear have timber lintels. First-floor windows are two-light casements. The roof is covered in corrugated iron over the original thatch and features brick end stacks, with a coupled square chimney on the east side, which was reset in the late 20th century. A 20th-century single-story brick extension with a slated gable roof is attached to the west and is of no historic interest.
Inside, the ground floor retains the original 18th-century floor frame, including a substantial chamfered bridging beam and joists. One room features an open stone fireplace with an ogee stop-chamfered cambered bressumer and a bread oven. Some oak flooring and partitioning also remains. On the first floor, an open stone fireplace and a plank door with a strap hinge have been preserved. The roof structure has 20th-century purlins, but some original 18th-century principal and common rafters remain, with pegged and bolted collars.
