Description
Ashgrove and the attached cowhouse is a farmhouse and cowhouse that likely dates from the early to mid-18th century, with alterations and extensions made in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble with brick dressings and has a slate roof, featuring an axial brick ridge stack located to the right of the center. It is aligned north-south and faces west, possibly reflecting a longhouse design. The structure has two storeys, with three windows on the first floor (including a blocked opening beneath the stack) and four on the ground floor, one of which belongs to the attached cowhouse on the left. All windows are late 19th-century metal casements, with those to the left of the stack featuring Gothic glazing and cambered heads. There is a ledged door to the left of the center. The left end of the building serves as a cowshed, with a hayloft above, accessible from the left gable end. Inside, both ground floor rooms are supported by heavy spine beams and joists, and the fireplace in the right room has a massive, curved timber lintel.
