Description

No. 14, Castle Street is a house, now converted into flats, dating from 1728. It is constructed of brick with a hipped Welsh slate roof and brick end stacks. The building is symmetrical in design, with three storeys and a cellar, and features a five-window front. The windows are predominantly 4/4 sash windows with cambered heads, set within gauged brick segmental arches, finished with moulded stone key blocks and sills. Above these are further 2/4 sash windows in a similar style. A parapet is topped with moulded stone coping.

The central entrance is accessed by steps leading to a glazed door, enclosed within a wood doorcase with a segmental pediment and triglyph frieze on fluted pilasters. The building has rusticated ashlar quoins and enriched rainwater heads, dated 1728.

The right returned side has buttress stacks flanking the entrance, leading to a 6-panelled door and overlight with glazing bars, positioned under a flat hood supported by pilasters and cast-iron columns. Above this are two 4/4 sash windows, set within gauged brick flat arches. To the left is a 4/4 sash window and a blocked opening, also framed by gauged brick segmental arches. Rusticated ashlar quoins and moulded stone coping are present on the parapet.

The rear elevation mirrors the front, though the doorcase has a simpler entablature, and there is a 2/4 sash window above a mutilated door.

The interior of the flats retains original features, including an 18th century open well staircase with turned balusters and a panelled dado.
