Description

The building at 16 Castle Street, Ludlow, is a four-storey house, now converted into flats, dating from 1838 and designed and built by Samuel Stead, a mason-builder. It is constructed of brick with a hipped Welsh slate roof and brick lateral stacks. The front elevation has a two-window range; the first and second floors feature 6/6 sash windows with grooved stucco lintels, while the third floor has 3/3 sash windows with lintels inscribed "SS 1838". The entrance features a recessed two-leaf door with 12 panels and an overlight, set within a panelled case and sheltered by a moulded stone hood on columns. A cellar window is gridded. A rear crosswing has a hipped roof and is built of rubble with brick quoined openings. It contains 6/6 sash windows under rendered lintels to the first and second floors and a 3/3 sash window under a gauged brick flat arch to the third floor. The right gable end of the wing has timber-frame and brick infill with two-light windows with leaded lights to the second and third floors. A tall, round-headed wood staircase light is found within the returned side, set under a segmental arch.
