Description

The houses at 20 and 22 Castle Street date from the 18th century and are now used as a house and offices. They are built of brick, with old plain tiles to the roof and a brick axial ridge stack featuring slate pots. The houses are three storeys plus an attic and cellar, with a three-window front. The windows are predominantly 6/6 sashes in moulded cases, with grooved stucco lintels. Some later 19th-century 3/3 sashes are also present, set within moulded cases and featuring gauged brick flat arches. Moulded wooden eaves run along the roofline. Two gable dormers are visible, featuring plastered gables and 2-light casements. Brick coped gable parapets finish the roof.

The left-hand house has a 6-panel door with a fanlight, within a panelled round-headed case topped by a moulded wooden open pediment on plain consoles and pilasters. To the right of the door are two 6/6 sashes, and a 20th-century 8/8 sash, all with moulded cases and grooved stucco lintels. The right-hand house features a 6-panel door with a fanlight, set within a gauged brick semi-circular arch with a simple hood on wrought-iron brackets. A storey band runs above the ground floor. The left return has a 6/6 sash on the first floor, above a window and part-glazed door, both set within gauged brick flat arches.

The rear of the property has twin gabled wings with 8/8 sashes and a 2-light casement on the first and second floors, all within segmental arches. There are also two 2-light casements, one of metal, in the gables. A skylight is present, as is a brick stack to the left-hand unit.

Inside, there is a corner fireplace to the front of the right-hand house (No. 20).
