Description
12 Castle Street, formerly known as the George Hotel, is a mid-19th century inn with a front that conceals an earlier core. The building features a stucco exterior and a Welsh slate roof, with brick stacks located at the rear. It stands three stories high with a cellar and has a four-window range. The windows are margin-glazed sashes, adorned with vermiculated key blocks and sill-corbels, while smaller sashes are found on the second floor. The façade includes engraved storey bands, a moulded eaves, and a coped gable parapet on the left side.
To the left, there is a passageway leading to the rear, secured by wrought-iron gates. On the right, a part-glazed panelled door with an overlight featuring a cambered head is set in a plain case, accompanied by another window that has glazing bars and upper casements. The entrance is framed by panelled pilasters and topped with a moulded fascia board and cornice supported by fluted consoles.
The right side of the building has a chamfered stone band and a 20th-century superstructure and chimney. The rear gable is constructed of rubble and brick, featuring various lights and casements set under brick segmental arches, along with a later 19th-century range that includes 6/6 sashes beneath concrete lintels.
