Description
The Bedford Arms Hotel, formerly known as The George, is a hotel that dates from the early and late 18th century, with 19th-century additions. It is constructed from colourwashed and plastered brick and features a steeply pitched clay tile roof that is hipped to the left and half-hipped to the right. The building has a long block that faces the road and is divided into four distinct sections of varying heights, with a variety of projecting blocks at the rear.
The main section is two storeys high and has a symmetrical facade with a pattern of two, one, and six sashes that include glazing bars, set in shallow reveals with segmental arched heads. There is an off-centre wide Doric porch in antis, which has a simply moulded entablature, part-glazed double doors, and sidelights. A string course runs above both storeys, and there is a plain parapet with brick coping. Above the porch, an ornamental wrought iron bracket supports a sign.
To the left, there is a slightly projecting section that appears to be three storeys high, but the top storey is a parapet with blind windows. This section has two windows per floor, also with sashes and glazing bars, and features string courses on the first and second floors, along with brick coping on the parapet. The right-hand section is two storeys and attics high, with two sashes with glazing bars on the ground and first floors, and two box dormers with casements in the attic. It has a central doorway with a flat hood on cut brackets and a string course on the first floor. Adjoining to the right is a single bay later block that is two storeys but lower, featuring sashes with glazing bars. The building is topped with three multiple ridge stacks and a gable end stack on the left, all made of brick.
