Description
Woburn War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1920. The plinth was designed by Frederick Mills, and the cross was made by J.P. White & Sons. The land for the memorial was provided on a 1,000-year lease by the 11th Duke of Bedford, who also contributed to the cost of the cross. The memorial is constructed from Portland stone and features a bronze sword. It has an octagonal plinth with a step and three diminishing tiers, topped by a cross of octagonal section.
The north-western face of the cross has a bronze sword attached to its head and shaft. The top tier of the plinth is inscribed in Gothic script with "For God/King and/Country." The middle tier lists the names of those who died in both world wars in Latin script, along with the inscription "IN MEMORY OF/THE MEN OF THE/PARISH OF WOBURN/WHO GAVE THEIR/LIVES FIGHTING FOR/THEIR COUNTRY/AND FOR THEIR/HOMES IN THE GREAT/WAR OF 1914-1918." The lowest tier bears the inscription "GREATER LOVE/HATH NO MAN/THAN THIS THAT/A MAN LAY DOWN/HIS LIFE FOR HIS/FRIENDS ST JOHN XV 13."
The cross is situated in a grassed and gravelled area. This memorial is a typical example of its kind from this period and forms a group with the Town Hall in the Market Place.
