Description

Serendib is a house, with the ground floor converted to a shop, dating from the early to mid 18th century, and featuring an early 19th-century shop front. It is constructed of brownish red brick, with many vitrified bricks and lighter red dressings, topped by a 20th-century tile roof. The building has a six-bay facade, with two storeys and attics. The left-hand three bays of the ground floor are occupied by the shop front, which has a broad central bay flanked by two narrower ones, supported by four reeded engaged columns decorated with carved twisted ribbons.

All windows are fitted with glazing bars and marginal lights, with the upper sections of the outer windows designed as separate panels resembling fanlights, also featuring marginal lights. An ornamental moulded entablature projects slightly above the outer bays. The right-hand part of the ground floor has two sash windows flanking a 20th-century doorway, which features a part-glazed six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight, all within a moulded surround.

On the first floor, there are six windows—three sashes and three blind. All windows have gauged brick flat heads, with the second and fifth windows on the first floor displaying scalloped ornamentation cut into them. The sashes are equipped with glazing bars and wide moulded wood surrounds that are almost flush with the wall. The attic includes two hipped dormers, each containing two-light casements, and there is a red brick ridge stack on the left-hand side at the junction with the adjoining property.
