Description

The Chestnuts is a Grade II* listed house located on George Street in Woburn, dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of red brick, with the front elevation featuring header bond and the gable ends in English bond. The building includes quoins, a string course, and a cornice made of Totternhoe clunch, topped with a slated mansard roof. The house has a double-pile plan and stands two storeys with attics. There are single-storeyed outbuildings from the 19th century that project from the rear.

The front elevation is symmetrical, with the ground floor showcasing two Venetian windows, featuring wooden pilasters, entablatures, and archivolts. The semi-circular heads of the central sashes are concealed by wooden louvres integrated into the arch of the surround. On the first floor, there are two modified Venetian windows flanking a single sash window. These differ from the ground floor windows, as the central window and the central parts of the outer ones have flat-headed sashes topped by ogee arches, all supported by simple console brackets below the sills. The outer windows are set into slightly projecting bays. The attic features three pedimented dormers, each containing sashes with glazing bars.

The central doorway consists of a six-panel door, with the upper pair glazed and the lower four fielded, set within plain reveals. Flanking pilasters support an ornamented ogee head, all crafted from timber. The string course and cornice display simple mouldings, and there are red brick integral stacks at both gable ends.

Inside, two ground floor rooms retain fielded pine panelling and fire surrounds. The open well staircase features paired barleytwist balusters, and both ground and first floor windows have internal panelled shutters.
