Description
Nos. 16, 18, and 20 George Street are a row of houses dating from the early 18th century, with No. 16 likely being a reworking of an earlier structure. The buildings are constructed of colourwashed brick and feature a 20th-century tile roof. This two-storey row borders the road and has blocks with one storey and attics that project from the rear. The facade has eight windows; those in No. 16 are arranged asymmetrically, while Nos. 18 and 20, which were formerly a single house, have a symmetrical arrangement. All windows are sashes with glazing bars, some of which are quite heavy, set in almost flush moulded frames. The ground floor windows are in segmental-headed openings. No. 16 has an off-centre doorway, while Nos. 18 and 20 share a single central doorway. Both doorways have similar surrounds featuring engaged elliptical Tuscan columns that support a plain entablature, with flanking panelled reveals. Only No. 16 retains its original six-panel door, which is topped by a rectangular fanlight with ornamental glazing bars. The row also features a variety of gable end and ridge stacks, with one on No. 16 positioned almost in line with the doorway.
