Description

The George Hotel is a public house that was formerly a coaching inn, dating from the 18th century. The front features slate hanging, while the rest of the building is rendered, likely over rubble. It has a fairly steep dry slate roof with three flat-roofed dormers on the left side, along with brick end stacks and one axial stack. The building has a double-depth evolved plan and stands two storeys plus an attic, with a front that has a three-to-one window range. The windows are 20th-century horned sashes with glazing bars set within moulded architraves. On the ground floor, there are paired sash windows on either side of a right-of-centre porch, and a larger window above the right-hand one. The porch is a large distyle near Doric style, featuring unfluted square columns and a simple entablature, with an 18th-century four-panel door.

The subsidiary features include a rubble retaining wall that has a central T-plan staircase, topped with dressed stone coping and early to mid-19th-century wrought-iron railings. Historically, this inn was notable for hosting the first meeting of the Plymouth East Turnpike Trust, which took place following the 1757 Act of Parliament. The interior has not been inspected.
