Description
The Plympton War Memorial is a parish war memorial that was unveiled in May 1924. It was designed by the rector of St Maurice, Reverend C.E. Seccombe.
Constructed from grey Cornish granite, the memorial takes the form of an obelisk set on a plinth, which is elevated above a platform with two steps. It is located to the north-west of the parish church of St Maurice, which is listed as Grade II, and to the north of the motte of the ruined Plympton Castle, also listed as Grade II.
The obelisk consists of three blocks of granite and features a cross in relief on the east and west fronts, along with laurel wreaths on the north and south fronts. The east front has an inscription in inset lead lettering that reads: ‘IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF / PLYMPTON ST. MAURICE. / WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR / FOR FREEDOM AND JUSTICE, / 1914 – 1918. / “THEY SHALL BE HAD IN EVERLASTING REMEMBRANCE.” The west front bears the inscription: ‘IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF / PLYMPTON ST MAURICE / WHO DIED FOR THEIR FELLOW-MEN IN THE WAR. / 1939 – 1945. / “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS.”
