Description

Ludlow College High Hall is a school building from the late 18th century, constructed of brick with a hipped Welsh slate roof. It features a central staircase plan, is three stories tall with a basement, and has a five-window range. The windows include six 6/6 sashes and four 3/3 sashes, all set in moulded cases beneath gauged brick flat arches. The building has a moulded and modillioned eaves cornice, a parapet, and a central mullion and transom window under a cambered arch, topped with a raised portion of a modillioned stone coped moulded parapet and four domed louvres.

Access is through steps leading to a central door with six fielded panels and a gothic glazed fanlight, located in a round-headed case beneath a porch with an open pediment hood supported by Ionic columns. This entrance is flanked by pairs of mullion and transom windows with casements, which are set above basement windows, some of which are blocked. The stone coped wing walls are adorned with attached wrought-iron railings.

To the left, there is a 19th-century double-depth wing that has similar window styles on the first and second floors, along with a moulded cornice and parapet. The entrance on this wing features a six fielded-panel door with an overlight that has glazing bars, all under a gauged brick flat arch. To the left of this entrance is a canted tripartite window with casements and a clerestory, also under a gauged brick flat arch. The right return of the building displays various sashes and large mullion and transom windows, all under gauged brick flat arches, with a cornice and parapet that extends around the building. The rear elevation includes pairs of mullion and transom windows with casements and glazing bars, flanking pairs of 3/3 sashes and a central 6/6 sash. The ground floor features a Venetian staircase window, and the building is capped with a returned cornice and parapet.
