Description

Castle Lodge is a house likely dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, with a significant rebuild during the late 16th or early 17th century. The construction is primarily rubble, with timber-frame and plaster sections, and a hipped slate roof, featuring a brick stack at the rear. The building is three stories high, with a four-window front. The facade has 16th-century moulded wood mullion and transom windows with casements and small leaded lights. A later 2nd floor is constructed with timber framing, a moulded bressummer supported by consoles with stone corbels, and mullioned windows with leaded lights. The right-hand entrance is framed by a pointed arch, with a moulded wood mullion and transom window to the right and a large bay with a wood transom and further mullion and transom window to the left, all featuring leaded lights. The front facing Mill Street has a jettied, chevron-braced 2nd floor. To the right is an 18th-century tiered canted bay with mullion and transom leaded lights, with decorative detailing to the ground floor, and to the left, a blocked opening and further mullion and transom windows with leaded lights on the ground and 1st floors. A right return elevation is of rubble, with windows to the 1st and 2nd floors. Late 18th-century wrought-iron railings and a gate, featuring urn finials on posts and a stone plinth, run along the Castle Square and Mill Street frontages. The interior includes imported panelling from the 16th to the 19th centuries, decorative plaster ceilings with pendants, fireplaces with firebacks and overmantels, and panelled doors with architraves and entablatures.
