Description
Policeman's Corner is an early 19th-century toll house that has been converted into a house. It is built from stone rubble and features hipped and gabled slate roofs. The building has an octagonal plan with a gabled wing at the rear and a brick ridge stack in that wing.
The exterior consists of two storeys, with the entrance located on the west side in the rear wing. This entrance has a single multi-pane casement window with a stone sill above a pentice roof covering a single-storey lobby outshut, next to a diagonally-boarded door set within a 20th-century porch surround. On the right-hand gable-end return, there is another multi-pane casement window. The verge has plain bargeboards.
The octagonal section of the building features two-light multi-pane casements on opposing faces, with an inset toll-charge tablet located on the third side. There are three two-light multi-pane casements, one at the ground floor under the toll-charge tablet and the others on opposing diagonal faces. Each of these windows has a projecting painted stone hood on brackets and stone sills. One window retains its vertically boarded shutters.
Policeman's Corner is noted for being a remarkably unaltered example of a 19th-century toll house.
