Description

16 and 17 are two houses located in Richards Castle, dating from the late 16th century, with an 18th-century extension and 19th-century remodelling. The houses feature a painted timber frame on a plinth, with some brick and concrete-block alterations. They have a plain-tile roof, with a central 19th-century brick ridge stack, a brick rear eaves stack, and a projecting brick gable-end stack.

The exterior has a four-window range, with a central 18th-century timber-framed end-bay extension that is now divided into two dwellings. The buildings are two storeys tall and feature four 19th-century timber-framed oriel windows. These windows have framed panels at the storey division, are set on moulded brackets with a moulded sill, and have a cornice below a gabled semi-dormer roof. The oriels are flanked by pilasters, with plain 20th-century casements in No. 16 on the right and 19th-century iron lattice casements in No. 17 on the left. There is a central 19th-century lean-to entrance lobby extension that includes a pair of 19th-century panelled doors with an ornamental frame and head. The square framing is four panels high, with a brace and tension brace in No. 17.

On the right return side, the gable-end has been rebuilt in 20th-century concrete block with 20th-century casements. The left return side has a gable-end rebuilt in brick. The rear features two semi-dormer windows, various casements, and plain boarded doors. The windows in No. 17 on the right have iron lattice lights, while those in No. 16 on the left are plain. The square framing is four panels high but is partly obscured by 20th-century lean-to extensions.

The interior of No. 16 retains original chamfered bridging beams, while No. 17 has not been inspected.
