Description

Tollgate House is a former toll house that has been converted into a private residence, dating from the early 19th century. The building features rendered stone rubble and is partly slate-hung at the rear, topped with a cement washed slate roof that has canted ends. A central brick axial stack provides heating.

The house has an overall polygonal shape with eight canted sides, with the front and rear walls being longer than the side walls. It has a central lobby entrance leading to a two-room layout, heated by the central stack. There is a small 20th-century lean-to extension on the left and a 20th-century porch at the front.

The exterior is two stories high and has a regular two-window front made up of three canted walls. The central entrance features a 19th-century four-panel door with a 20th-century glazed porch. To the left, there is a 19th-century two-light casement window with a blind window above, and to the right, there are 19th-century two-light casements on both the ground and first floors. The original casements in the front and rear elevations have pointed two-centred arched frames with patterned glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected.
