Description

The Old Post Office Public House is a public house with a core dating from the 17th century, which was extended in the 19th century. It features a timber-framed structure that has been infilled with painted brick and has a plain tiled roof. The building is three stories tall and has a T-plan layout. The long range runs at right angles to the street, with the front portion finished in brick and painted to resemble timber framing. Each floor has inserted casement windows. The rear part of this range is partly timber-framed, with slender timbers raised in brick and also extended in the later 19th century. There is a single axial stack on the rear wall. A short cross wing has a timber-framed core that has been refaced in brick, also painted to mimic timber framing, but the gable end remains exposed. The gable features square panels with arch bracing and thinner timbers in the upper storey, indicating it may be a later addition. The entrance is through a doorway in a hipped-roofed porch at the angle of the building, and there is a tripartite sash window with small upper panes, along with a heavy oriel sash window above. The upper storey contains a 16-pane sash window, and there is a gable end stack.
