Description
A pair of shops, likely originally two dwellings, was probably constructed around 1730. The building is brick with a plain tiled roof and stands three storeys high with an attic, originally featuring a four-window front. Shops were inserted into the ground floor, with one featuring a late 19th-century shop front and elaborate consoles to its fascia. A wide, central segmental archway, topped with a plaster urn, provides access to a passage at the rear. Above, the original windows are segmentally arched 12-pane sashes, each with a gauged brick head and stone keystone. A tripartite sash window was later inserted to the right. The window above the passageway has a small balcony with cast-iron railings. The six upper windows are also segmentally arched 12-pane sashes with gauged brick heads and stone keystones. Angle quoins and a modillion eaves cornice are present. Coped gables with moulded kneelers top the building, along with gable end stacks. A roof light is found in the left-hand unit, and two dormers have been inserted or altered in the right-hand unit. Rear wings feature crow stepped gables, and a damaged datestone in a gable apex displays the partial date "173-".
