Description
79 and 80 Wyle Cop are a pair of shops that were likely originally a single dwelling. They date from the late 16th century or early 17th century and have undergone later alterations. The buildings are timber-framed but have been rendered, with some parts painted to imitate timbering. They feature a plain tiled roof and rise to three storeys with an attic, presenting a two-window range.
The shop fronts were inserted in the early to mid-20th century, with the left shop front featuring a fascia supported by ornate console brackets. This window is flanked by doorways, one of which is now blocked. The left-hand unit has paired 4-pane sash windows, while the second storey has a paired 9-pane sash. On the right side, there are tripartite sashes on each floor. The second storey jetties out, and the bressumer has been reshaped with moulded plaster work that is echoed in the projecting eaves cornice. There is a single gable dormer in the roof to the left, along with a gable end and an axial stack.
