Description

This is a disused cottage dating from the mid-17th century, with later alterations. It is timber framed with red brick infill and has a graded slate roof. The cottage has a two-cell plan and an integral end stack, standing one storey high with an attic. The framing features square panels, with three panels from the cill to the wall-plate, and it displays a well-preserved set of carpenter's marks. The left gable end is constructed of regularly coursed shale with red brick dressings.

The cottage has mid- to late 19th-century windows, including two casements set in the framing on the ground floor, with gabled eaves dormers directly above them. There is a plank door to the left. The integral end stack, also on the left, has a 19th-century red brick shaft and remnants of a brick bread oven.

Inside, the framing is visible throughout, including in the cross-wall. The left ground-floor room features two chamfered spine beams with run-out stops and plain joists. It also has a partly infilled inglenook fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel and a 19th-century cast-iron cooking range. The right ground-floor room, which also has a chamfered spine beam and plain joists, is now divided by a lath and plaster partition wall. An oak winder staircase leads to the back wall and is accessed through a plank and muntin door with H-hinges. The roof structure consists of a collar and tie beam design in two bays, with double purlins that are lower chamfered with run-out stops.
