Description

Wotherton Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 17th century, with extensions made in the mid-19th century and further alterations over time. The building is roughcast, hiding a timber frame, and features uncoursed limestone rubble additions, all topped with slate roofs. It has an L-shaped layout, consisting of the original 17th-century range and a 19th-century addition that extends at right angles to the rear on the left side. The farmhouse is two stories high with a gable-lit attic and cellars, presenting a three-window front. The windows are late 20th-century casements, and there is a 19th-century six-panel door set in a plain doorcase between the second and third windows from the left. To the left, there is a large external stone and brick stack. At the rear, a timber-framed lean-to dairy features a tall external brick stack on the left, which was rebuilt in the 19th century. A full gabled dormer provides light to the staircase. The two-story 19th-century addition has segmental-headed casements on both floors and a boarded door to the right, with an integral end stack that has a red brick shaft. Inside, the farmhouse boasts massive chamfered spine beams with stepped ogee stops in the two main ground-floor rooms. There is a plank and muntin door with L-hinges leading to the cellar, and a similar door with a rectangular barred overlight at the foot of the oak staircase, which leads to the attic and features carved splat balusters on the first-floor landing. An exposed jowled wall post is visible on the back wall of the stairs to the attic, along with several plank doors leading to the first floor and attic. The roof structure includes queen struts in three bays, with upper and lower collars and double purlins.
