Description
Beckbury War Memorial is a churchyard memorial dating from around 1920, with additions made after 1945. It is constructed from red sandstone and features a cross with a tapered shaft, base, plinth, and a stepped platform. The cross has octagonal arms with trefoil ends at both the cap and arms. The tapered, octagonal shaft has a moulded ring at the top where it connects to the cross, along with mouldings above the base. The top of the base is octagonal and tapers down to a square lower section. On the northern side, it is inscribed with the words ‘TO / THE GLORY OF / GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF ALL / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1919 / ESPECIALLY THOSE FROM THIS PARISH’. The other three sides bear the names of the fallen, each side featuring an inscribed cross above the names. The square platform has three steps, and the top step on the north side has been extended, inscribed with ‘AND IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR / 1939 – 1945’ along with additional names listed below.
