Description
The Martley War Memorial is a churchyard cross that was unveiled in May 1920. It is made of stone ashlar and has a square plan, facing south.
At the top of the memorial, the cross features chamfered edges on all its arms, with a sculpture of the crucified Christ on the south face. The square shaft is undecorated except for chamfers along its upper edge, and it rises from a square plinth. The north side of the plinth has an inscription that reads: ‘TO THE / PRAISE OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF / THOSE OF THIS PARISH / WHO DIED FOR THEIR / KING AND COUNTRY / IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE’. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the east and west sides of the plinth, while the south side remains blank. The plinth is set on a deep step that creates a platform, which is inscribed on its south face with ‘1939-1945’ along with the names from the Second World War.
