Description
The Old Chantry is a building dating to 1913, originally designed as The Chantry School and master’s house. It was later used as a parish hall and caretaker's house. The architects were Corlette and Nicholson of Lincoln’s Inn, London, whose signed perspective drawing is preserved within the building.
The building is timber-framed with brick infill, set upon a brick plinth. Its roof is covered in plain tiles with a copper section, and it features a stack to the left and another off-centre on the ridge. The structure follows a basic "H" plan, incorporating classrooms in the right and centre ranges, with the master's house positioned to the left. The right cross-wing has a gable, as does the left side of the building, both gables being weatherboarded. The building is 1 1/2 storeys high, with six windows of varying sizes, predominantly small pine casement windows, alongside two larger windows – one in the gable of the school hall to the right, and another to the right of the master's house. An entrance is located to the left, accessing the house, and another entrance, set within a copper-roofed porch with a moulded cornice, is situated in the angle with the cross-wing to the right.
