Description

The Smithy is a late 17th or early 18th century cottage. It is timber-framed with painted brick infill, and has a plain tile roof, hipped on the right side. A large brick stack with a detached shaft stands on the right gable, and a smaller brick stack is at the rear left. The building is L-shaped and has 1½ storeys, with two framed bays and two gabled dormers illuminating the attic. There are two 19th-century two-light casement windows. The entrance is positioned centrally on the right side and has a late 19th-century gabled canopy supported by wooden posts. The timber framing is characterised by three rectangular panels reaching to the wall-plate; the lower two are horizontal, while the top panel is vertical on the front facade, and all are vertical on the left gable. Straight tension braces are present. The left gable features a queen strut truss with collar and two plank weatherings.
