Description
28, 29, and 30 Wyle Cop is a former hotel known as the Unicorn Hotel and Garage of Messrs. Wales & Edwards Ltd. This building dates from the late 16th century and underwent extensive restoration in 1890. It features a timber-framed structure with a plain tiled roof and consists of two and three storeys, arranged in a six-window range. A central archway leads to a rear courtyard, dividing the building into two distinct sections.
The framing is characterized by close studding with small quatrefoil panels and a middle rail, along with a jettied upper storey. The left-hand section has traditional-style shop windows with arched lights, and two three-light oriel windows in the jettied upper floor. There are also three-light casement windows in paired gables, which have barge-boards with pendant finials. The shop windows continue in the return under the archway, with a single four-light casement window above the high central carriage archway.
The right-hand section was extensively modified in 1890. Its ground floor is constructed of brick with stone dressings, featuring a doorway to the left and two windows with small leaded upper panes. This section includes an additional storey beneath the jetty, accommodating the sloping site, which has one three-light oriel window and a three-light leaded mullioned and transomed window. Above the jetty, there are three mullioned and transomed windows with three and four leaded lights. The rear wings on either side of the archway are also partly timber-framed, and the building has gable and axial stacks.
