Description
The Nationwide building and entrance to the Unicorn Hotel is an inn that has been converted into a house and shops. It dates from the mid-17th century and consists of a single structure. The exterior is roughcast with a stone slate roof that is laid in diminishing courses, and it features a brick ridge stack. The building has two storeys plus an attic and a three-window range. To the left, there is a 20th-century shop front, while to the right, the carriageway entrance to the Unicorn Hotel has moulded, stop-chamfered jambs and panelled doors, which are dated 1648 on the spandrels. The first floor is adorned with three bow windows that have renewed casements. There are also three gable-front dormers with renewed three-light casements, as well as renewed bargeboards and pendants. The eaves project deeply, and a moulded beam with pendants runs the full length of the attic floor. At the rear, there is a courtyard. Inside, the first floor features a 17th-century stone fireplace, a fragment of 17th-century block-printed wallpaper on a beam, and a four-light wood mullioned window with original glazing.
