Description
Carpenters is a house and shop located in Banbury Market Place, dating from the 16th century, with remodels in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features mixed construction of ironstone rubble and timber frame, displaying herringbone patterns and close studding, topped with a 20th-century tile roof. The building has two storeys plus an attic, with a modern shop front on the ground floor. There are three wooden mullioned windows with lead cames, each with three lights. The attic has two gable front dormers, which have renewed bargeboards and pendants, each also featuring a three-light wooden mullioned window. The south elevation includes two renewed wooden mullioned and transomed windows on the first floor and a three-light wooden mullioned window in the attic. The exterior displays low relief arcaded pargetting. Inside, there is a straight flight with a winder stair and a smoke blackened butt purlin roof, with curved wind braces and raking struts connecting the principal rafter to the tie beam. No.16 comprises two-thirds of the original extent of the house.
