Description
No. 1 Parson's Street is a house that has been converted into offices and a shop. It dates from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of regularly coursed ironstone rubble and has a slate roof. It is a single storey plus attic and features a three-window range.
To the right of the shop front, there is a 17th-century doorway with a plank and batten door, which has a four-centred arch and moulded stone jambs. There are fragmentary remains of a hoodmould with diamond-shaped label stops above this doorway. Adjacent to the doorway is a four-light stone mullioned window and another doorway with renewed stonework. Above the doorway to the right, there is a three-light stone mullioned window. The attic level features a five-light stone mullioned window and two three-light stone mullioned windows, all with hood moulds and label stops. The building has two gabled eaves dormers that have stone copings and stone mullioned windows.
Inside, the cross passage has been incorporated into the shop area. The left part of the building, which includes the Gas Showroom and offices above, is not included in this listing. This building was once known as the Prebendary House.
