Description

The former nurses' home, now disused, was built in 1910. It is constructed of Ruabon red brick with stone dressings and green slate roofs. The building has three storeys and an attic, with four storeys in the outer bays, and features nine unequal bays arranged in a 2-4-1-2 pattern. The entrance is located in a recessed four-bay section, framed by a pedimented architrave with a Gibb's surround and bolection moulding over the pilasters, which are inscribed with "Nurses Home." A cartouche below the pediment is dated 1910. Most of the windows are sash windows with six panes over two, featuring flat-arched gauged brick heads with stone keys. There is one oriel bay window on the first floor in the four-bay range, supported by stone corbels and topped with a balustraded parapet. The foundation stone, dated 1908, is located below. The central single bay has tripartite windows with banded stone mullions, and Diocletian windows are set above in the pedimented gable. The building has a hipped roof over the advanced left-hand bay and a pediment over the right-hand bay, which is also advanced. The central range features a mansard roof. Stone quoins and string courses are present, along with axial stacks that have stone bands and arcaded decoration. The eaves cornice is overhanging and decorated with modillions.
