Description

SHREWSBURY

SJ4912NW WINDSOR PLACE 653-1/11/695 (South West side) 10/01/53 Perches House

GV II*

House or mansion. Late C16. Timber-framed with brick plinth and plain tiled roof. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 3-window range in main section facing street. Low ground floor within plinth with central 6-panelled door and renewed windows flanking it. Moulded bressumer suggests that upper storey may once have been jettied out: it is framed with close studding with some middle rails, but the irregular pattern of the timbering suggests a number of different phases of construction. Upper windows are 12-pane sashes, with a renewed 3-light casement window to the left, and the blocked remains of an earlier, perhaps original window, below it. Jettied second storey with moulded bressumer, blocked window to left, then two 16-pane sashes in slightly projecting cases. Evenly spaced close studding with mid-rail. 1 dormer in the roof, gable end stacks. Right-hand section beyond in separate occupation, and possibly a different phase of construction. Also 3 storeys, 4-window range with 6-panelled door to left of centre in moulded architrave with vestigial canopy. Flanking windows are 2- and 4-light casements. 12-pane sash windows to first floor. Plain bressumer to jettied upper storey, which has sash windows of 2 and 4-panes. 2 dormers in the roof. Additional bay to right with steeper pitched roof. Brick to ground and first floor then plaster over timber frame to jettied upper storey. Tripartite sash window to first floor, 12-pane sash window to second storey, and dormer in the roof.
