Description
Betton Old Hall is a house dating from the late 16th century, with later restoration and extensions in the late 19th century. It is timber-framed with plastered infill on a 19th-century brick plinth, with a painted brick and planted timber front. The roof is covered in plain tiles. The timber framing features close studding with a middle rail.
The house consists of a central block from the mid-16th century, originally of one framed bay, with later flanking wings that step down to the right. The house is two storeys high with an attic, and has one-storey wings. The first floor of the central block juts out, supported by three large brackets beneath a moulded bressumer. The jettied gable has end brackets and an ovolo-moulded tie beam. The line of the first-floor bressumer is continued across the flanking wings by a planted moulded timber. The barge boards have finials. There is an external brick end stack to the right and a tapered painted brick end stack to the first part of the right-hand range. A 20th-century three-light metal casement is centrally positioned on the first floor. There are four ground-floor windows, which are 2- and 3-light mullioned and transomed wooden casements. A boarded door is located in the right-hand wing, between the second and third windows from the right, set within a chamfered surround with broach stops and nail studding. The interior has not been inspected.
