Description
The Parade Shopping Centre, originally the Royal Salop Infirmary, is a former infirmary now functioning as a shopping arcade. It was built between 1826 and 1830, designed by Edward Haycock, although some attribute it to Robert Smirke. The building features ashlar facing and is designed in the Greek Revival style. It has three storeys and an attic, with a central range of five bays that alternate between advanced and recessed sections. The outer bays have narrow 12-pane sash windows, while the next advanced bays feature tripartite sash windows with pedimented heads on the ground floor, along with stressed pilasters and recessed panels above the cornice.
The central recessed range showcases massive paired fluted Doric columns supporting a pedimented portico with a triglyph frieze. This portico contains a glazed central door with sidelights and a tripartite sash window above. Above the portico are 12-pane sash windows and a cornice that bears an inscription: "Salop Infirmary established 1745. Supported by voluntary subscriptions and donations. Rebuilt 1830. E. Haycock Architect." A recessed mansard roof behind this main range is likely a 20th-century addition.
Flanking the main range are additional blocks of three bays, with an arcaded entrance on the left and a central pedimented doorway on the right. The left-hand block connects to a later addition built between 1908 and 1910, which has four storeys and features 4-pane sash windows with angle pilasters and a cornice. The rear elevation includes cast-iron balconies that run between projecting bays on each floor.
