Description

This is a row of five houses, now subdivided and partly used as shops, located in St Mary’s Place, Shrewsbury. The houses were largely built in the late 18th century, but incorporate elements from earlier structures. They are constructed of brick, with the roof hidden behind a parapet. The houses are three storeys high and have a five-window front. The doorways feature six-panelled doors with fanlights, set within architraves with panelled rebates and console brackets to the cornice. The doorway on the left is flanked by two windows with segmentally arched heads; the left-hand window has fan plasterwork beneath its arch. A shop front, designed to resemble traditional features, has been inserted on the right-hand side. The upper windows are twelve-pane sashes with flat-arched gauged brick heads, with six-pane sashes in the attic. A parapet with eaves sits above a stuccoed cornice. Traces of earlier structure exist on the side elevation, including early 18th-century brickwork and the remains of a former chimney stack. The rear of No.8 incorporates remnants of a timber-framed structure, including a renewed tie beam and a king post roof truss.
